Family Planning

Family planning allows you to decide if, when, and how many children you wish to have. Choosing the right contraceptive method depends on your health, age, lifestyle, and future plans. We provide a complete range of contraceptive care and personalised counselling at Dhande Hospital.

Copper T (IUD)

The Copper T (Intra-Uterine Device) is a long-acting, reversible contraceptive. The TCu 380A model is effective for up to 10 years and is one of the most reliable forms of birth control available — with over 99% effectiveness when correctly inserted.

  • Non-hormonal — does not affect hormone levels.
  • Long-acting — up to 10 years, with no daily routine needed.
  • Fully reversible — fertility returns promptly after removal.
  • Can be inserted shortly after childbirth or during menstruation.

Oral Contraceptive Pills

Oral contraceptive pills contain synthetic hormones — progestin and oestrogen — that prevent ovulation and thereby prevent pregnancy. When taken correctly and consistently, they are over 99% effective.

  • Taken daily, at the same time each day.
  • Can regulate and lighten periods, and reduce menstrual cramps.
  • Fertility returns quickly after stopping the pill.
  • Requires a prescription; not suitable for everyone — a consultation will help determine if it is right for you.

Tubectomy (Tubal Sterilisation)

Tubectomy is a permanent surgical method of contraception for women who have completed their family and do not wish to have more children. The fallopian tubes are surgically blocked or cut, preventing eggs from reaching the uterus.

  • Considered permanent — reversal is possible but not always successful.
  • Performed laparoscopically at Dhande Hospital, meaning a shorter recovery and minimal scarring.
  • Does not affect hormone levels or menstrual cycles.
  • A thorough counselling session is conducted before the procedure to ensure informed consent.

If you have had a tubectomy and wish to have another child, fallopian tube reattachment (reversal) is possible in select cases. See our Laparoscopy page for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which contraceptive method is right for me?

The right method depends on your age, health, whether you have had children, how long you want contraception, and your personal preferences. Dr. Neelima Dhande will discuss all options with you and recommend the most suitable choice. Please call ahead to take an appointment.

How effective is the Copper T?

When correctly inserted, the TCu 380A Copper T is over 99% effective — making it one of the most reliable reversible contraceptive methods available. It works for up to 10 years and requires no daily action from you.

Can the Copper T be removed if I want to get pregnant?

Yes. The Copper T can be removed at any time by a doctor. Fertility typically returns very quickly — often within the first menstrual cycle after removal.

Are there side effects from the contraceptive pill?

Some women experience mild side effects in the first 1–2 months — such as nausea, spotting between periods, breast tenderness, or mood changes. These usually settle as the body adjusts. If side effects persist or are troublesome, an alternative pill or method can be tried. Always take the pill under medical supervision.

Is tubectomy reversible?

Tubectomy is intended to be permanent. Reversal surgery (fallopian tube reattachment) is possible and is performed laparoscopically at Dhande Hospital, but success depends on the method used for the original sterilisation and how much of the tube remains. It is important to be certain before choosing this method.

For non-emergency visits, please always call and take appointment before coming to the clinic.
