Types of Abortion
Medical Abortion
A medical abortion uses a combination of medications — mifepristone followed by misoprostol — to end a pregnancy without surgery. It is suitable in the early stages of pregnancy.
Advantages: no anaesthesia or surgical procedure required. Can be done in an early stage of pregnancy.
Medical abortion is not recommended for people who:
- Have anaemia or serious blood clotting disorders.
- Are allergic to the prescribed medications.
- Have an IUD (Copper T) in place — this must be removed first.
- Have an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus).
Suction Abortion (Vacuum Aspiration)
Suction aspiration is a short surgical procedure used to terminate a pregnancy. It is also used when medical abortion is incomplete or has failed.
Suction abortion is not advised for people who:
- Have a uterine abnormality that makes the procedure unsafe.
- Have blood clotting disorders.
- Have an active pelvic infection.
Dilatation & Evacuation (D&E)
D&E is a surgical procedure used for later-stage terminations. It is also indicated when foetal abnormalities are detected, or when the pregnancy poses a risk to the health of the mother. D&E is performed under anaesthesia by a specialist and is generally safe for women of all ages.
